EMF Community Coordinators carefully screen prospective volunteer host families without consideration of race, religion, national origin or economic background; selecting families who are truly interested in sharing a cross-cultural experience.

EMF looks for families that are enthusiastic, interested, flexible, stable, have a sense of humor, friendly and warm, and who want to share their daily life with a young student from a foreign country. Host  families come in all shapes and sizes and represent  the diversity of the American culture.

Families with or without children,  single parents with or without  children at home can apply. Having children the same age as the exchange student is not required. Most of our families are busy families but this provides an interesting environment for our students.   Students can share a room with one of their host siblings as long as they have their own bed. Host families can select the student they would like to host from among the pool of available students.

The host family can deduct $50 per month, as a charitable contribution, for income tax purposes during the time the student is in their home.

Host families provide room and board to the foreign student without remuneration, and the exchange student is expected to cover all additional expenses.
